It should be designed to slip and disengage when the rotary mechanism gets stuck so that the operator's hands and wrists are not put at risk of injury. The spring mechanism is good for absorbing the shock of routine bumps while operating in smooth soil, but it is not adequate to provide safety when encountering obstructions. There is no warning about this in the operator's manual or advice on what to do when this happens.
