It is firm enough to support your body to transfer to a wheelchair and back. It is waterproof and it is comfortable. I thought it would fit a hospital bed a little snugger lengthwise, but it seems a bit short but not anything that would prohibit you from using it on your hospital bed. The cover is slick and a bit noticeable when turning in bed so we are using a thin foam topper to eliminate that. The price is excellent and Walmart has all other vendors beat. The delivery was on time. It comes rolled up in a tight plastic in a rectangular box so it was not hard to bring in the house and not heavy. It seems be easier on the body than a twin bunkbed mattress we had and some pressure relief is found in this Medline mattress.
