Season one is a good season for this series. Its all Bret (Garner)until episode 8,then its Bart,Bret,Both.Bret,etc.Sometimes Garner introduces the Bart episodes,a few times Kelly did the same for the Bret episodes. The Diane Brewster character is ok the first two times, but gets tiring the next two times. The DVDs themselves are of good quality, the transfers are very good. The price(I bought in the store for 19 dollars)even on line very good for an awesome series. If you like James Garner, you cant go wrong, although I think youll enjoy the underrated Jack Kelly also

Smooth as a handle on a Gun, Maverick is the name!

The two Maverick Brothers (Bret - James Garner - and Bart - Jack Kelly) are both anti-heroes who live under the code that he who avoids a fight and runs like heck catches the next river boat out of there. They will, however, fight if they have to but would rather play poker and charm the ladies (who are usually con ladies out to get them). Created by Roy Huggins (The Fugitive, Run For Your Life, Rockford Files, 77 Sunset Strip) one of the most brilliant writer-producers even seen in television this show was an instant classic and the first two seasons are the best (Garner jumped ship for a while to make movies and Roger Moore, who replaced him, always seemed out of place to me on a horse -- and I like Roger Moore a lot but if he's going to ride a horse it was better as Ivanhoe than a Maverick Cousin from England). This isn't Gunsmoke, so don't expect high drama (in fact they parodied both Gunsmoke and Bonanza -- the Wheelrights were a hoot, especially small Paul). This is tongue-in-cheek western adventure at it's best. It don't get much better than this!
