Battery operated.

It takes batteries, so if your batteries get used, it slows down. I did order a different one for milk frothing and am using this one until it arrives. I will and have used specifically for whipping a medicine that doesn't need to be whipped daily, only monthly so its perfect for that purpose.

Very strong motor. Works great. The only downside I had is I recommend using it on tall glasses not (8oz) cups cuz motor is so strong that drinks tend to spill over the cups. You would have to fill the cups half to 2/3rds of the way to avoid over spilling.

I've used a lot of these handheld frothers but this one is the oddest one, the wand spins but sometime is teeters side to side while spinning and sometimes it just spins normally. I thought maybe I'm not pressing the button hard enough or at the wrong angle, I've tried many adjustments but it just does what it wants with very little "foaming" maybe I got a dud?
