This San Francisco Sourdough Starter culture has a history of over 200 years! This live sourdough starter not only creates the most delicious bread, but also carries a story dating back to the 1800s. My 92-year-old mom has lovingly cared for this starter for as long as I can remember. It’s like one of her children, predating both my sister and me. She bought the starter in 1951 from a famous San Francisco bakery while traveling with my dad, a retired U.S. Navy RDML. The bakery owner shared that the starter had been in use since 1850, and that its original owner had kept it in his family for 40 years before opening the bakery. This means we can trace the starter's history back to 1810! For over 70 years, my mom has cared for the starter, and as a result, we grew up enjoying homemade bread, cookies, pizza dough, and more.
