1900. január 25-én, a Somogy megyei Göllén született. Az akkori kor szokásának megfelelően keményen nevelték. A fiúra nagy hatást gyakorolt anyai nagyanyja és édesanyja, akik melegszívű szeretetükkel ellensúlyozták apja vasszigorát. Az elemi iskola első négy évét (1906-1910) szülőfalujában végezte el, az ötödik évet már Kaposváron kezdte el, ahová egy év múlva a család is költözött.
Első "vadászélményeit" már nagyon fiatalon (körülbelül 3 éves korában) szerezte, ahogyan a Ballagó idő című életrajzi regényében is említi. 1917 végén önként bevonult katonának, 1918 tavaszán iskolájában hadiérettségit tett, majd 1918-ig káplárként szolgált.
