In This Corner of the World (Blu-ray), Shout Factory, Kids & Family

I liked this movie but it's not an 'everyone lives happily ever after' kind of story. It takes place in World War II Japan near the end of the war, mostly on a small farm less than a hundred miles outside of Hiroshima. While it centers on a young wife's relationship with her new husband and her new in-laws, it provides a graphic view of what life was like for the rural population during the war. It would be easy to believe that the story was made-up or was taken from the real events of one person's life, a little research indicated that the events are actually those collected from the lives of several people. It does get very emotional at times. The animation, color and sound are all excellent. While this film has often been characterized as an antiwar film, I don't view it as such. It certainly has elements of that but I saw it as more of a coming of age story set in a very difficult time, not only for young people, but for the elders of the time as well.
