I Am David (DVD), Lions Gate, Drama

At the close of World War II the Soviet Union liberated Eastern Europe from Hitler's German National Socialists, after which the communists set up their own concentration camps called gulags. The film follows the story of a boy who went into a Bulgarian gulag at such a young age that he has no memory of the outside world and only has seen slave labor, beatings and executions. With his parents dead or missing, an adult in the camp helps the child escape, after which the boy will have to travel through both communist and democratic Europe to get to an address in Denmark. Along the way he learns that not all humans oppress others and are quite generous, in addition to coming across some whom even within freedom choose to be cruel. I Am David is directed by the genius behind Freaks and Greeks, Paul Feig. Fortunately the film was made before he insisted putting Melissa McCarthy in every one of his projects. I Am David is an intense drama but if Melissa McCarthy was in it, it would somehow become even less funny.
