Harris Farms Galvanized Steel Double Wall Poultry Drinker 5 Gallon

I've been raising Free Range Poultry for 15 years and have used every double walled fount and plastic drinkers from most manufacturers. I decided to try these out as I had never heard of Harris Farms and they look just like the Little Giant double wall founts that have been in use for generations. I purchased three of them and have had them in continual use for about a year. I am pleased to share that they are not rusting "yet". They fit well and I find the trough area to be plenty rigid. These are good for chickens of all breeds, sizes and ages. Baby Chicks may be tempted to step IN the trough and "could" get caught, soaked and drown. Becuase of that, I suggest NOT using these for starter chicks. You could fill the trough with marbles to prevent little ones from falling in, but not suitable as is. Metal founts like this one are necessary if you plan to sit your drinker on the galvanised heaters, the metal conducts the heat properly to keep water from freezing in winter. My only complaint about this style of drinker is that when you are filling it up, the small stopper that is attached to the spring clip does not prevent water from running out while filling before putting the top back over the base. I did not take a star for that because I haven't found a double wall found that does not have that problem. Remember that when it is full, you will be carrying 40 lbs... consider cleaning it out and putting it where you want it and filling it in place. I think one 5 gl drinker like this is suitable for 12 adult chickens, but two are always better, chickens may guard or chase lower status birds away from food and water, having two drinkers can make sure all birds will get access. I do recommend this drinker!
