Great Value Plain Nonfat Greek Yogurt, 32 oz Tub

My container of Great Value plain Greek yogurt has live and active cultures in it! Like others, I saw that “live and active cultures” was absent from the tub and figured this must mean that heat treating killed everything off. Confusingly, the individual containers of this same yogurt does list live and active cultures. So, I decided to put it to the test with some science. I picked up another brand of yogurt from my local co-op grocery store; the tub has lots of mention of the live cultures and lists the strains of bacteria inside. I then made two small batches of new yogurt being sure to avoid cross contamination. Each jar received the same milk (warmed to 180° then cooled to 110°) and two tablespoons of yogurt. One got the co-op yogurt and the other got the Great Value yogurt. Seven hours later, both jars have perfect yogurt in them! They have slightly different flavors, probably thanks to the particular bacteria in them. But they are both delicious and practically identical. So, maybe some part of the process for these tubs of yogurt prevents Walmart from labeling them as containing live and active cultures. Maybe they can’t guarantee it. But, I can say for sure that the tub I bought definitely had them and in enough quantity to make perfect yogurt exactly as well as other yogurt with live and active cultures printed on the tub.
