Strong and dependable utility folding knife

As a retired military guy and avid camper, I have owned and used various folding blade style knives. This knife caught my attention as a more utilitarian type blade for heavy cutting of rope, heavy twine, cardboard, etc. Though it is labeled as a Cleaver blade, I found it to be a bit to light to effectively be used as a chopper for wood or food products. I tried chopping small pieces of wood, which was totally ineffective. I also tried to chop up food products, such as carrots, celery, nuts, onions, etc., which again, I found the blade to be to light to be do clean chops, even though the blade is very sharp. So, I tried it on a recent weekend camping trip and found it to be excellent for cutting my various sized ropes and shaving tree limbs to help start a fire. Another great use, was treating it like a box cutter, thus cutting through boxes and plastic jugs. Through all my testing and use, the blade held strong and maintained a great edge. I sharpened it twice, though it was not necessary, just to get a feel for the steel in the blade and found it to be very harden steel. The exterior color of the handle and blade is a dull, stonewash medium gray, which seemed to not show any marring or scratches on the blade. It opens up fairly easy, with a little effort, and the cutout on the blade makes it easy to use your thumb or just to grasp the top of the blade; small hands will find the thumb action a bit more challenging, due to the size of the knife. It does have a nice index finger cutout guard, to protect your finger from sliding forward, onto the blade. It has a pocket clip, very short, so not the best if you plan to use it on a wide belt. The clip is sturdy, which I found I had to bend it out a bit (careful to not bend/open to much), in order to pull it out of my pants pocket without a struggle. My rudimentary measurements are: 1-1/2” W x 3.6” L blade, 8-1/2” open blade and body length, 5” body length (closed), 1-9/16” widest part of the body – not thickness, and it weighed in at 5.65 oz. Gerber is the designer, though it is made in China, but does carry the Gerber lifetime warranty. Overall, at the price point of this knife, this is a great utility style folding knife, which has found a home in my garage go-to tools section and occasionally on my hiking backpack.

Useful knife for kitchen, office or camping

I've found this handy knife very useful for a variety of functions around the house and for camping trips. A very sharp straight razor type blade makes it handy in the office to open packages, cut up boxes or sharpen a pencil the old fashioned way. Useful also in the kitchen to slice and dice squash, carrots, celery and more. I could never use a penknife for those jobs, but this handy cleaver-style blade does the trick and does it well. The knife's handle is shaped to fit the hand perfectly and has a very comfortable grip. The blade stays in place without worrying about it folding up accidentally by way of a very secure frame lock. For camping trips, this knife handles jobs that a smaller penknife could never accomplish, like cutting twigs for a fire, or shaving a point onto a stick for roasting hotdogs and marshmallows, or slicing up food before cooking. Additionally, I've used this Flatiron knife in the garage for small jobs like splicing wires or scoring a tile or glass. Overall this is a very handsome and durable knife for the price. And I like the fact that it's designed and engineered in Oregon. At first, I had a little trouble flicking the blade open with one hand using the thumb, but after a couple days of using the knife and breaking it in, I can now easily flick the blace open with one hand. Thanks, Gerber for a quality product.

Great Safety Features

Gerber Gear Flatiron, Folding Cleaver Blade knife, Frame Lock with Clip, Flat sage is an impressive cleaver knife. The cleaver is like one long straight edge blade, only with more substance to it. It is very sharp right out of the package. Opened up it is 8.5" long total. The blade is 3.8" long. It has a frame lock design for safety. It can be opened with one hand using the thumb hole. I find it just as easy to open with 2 hands. But, it is nice to know I have the option in a pinch. To close the knife grasp the lock bar and press back. My favorite part is the finger choil. It gives me more control over the knife for root cuttings. Or, for stripping the bark off small trees to dry the wood out. I have used it to cut rope. To open, and breakdown cardboard boxes. I'm sure I will use this for a number of small projects around the house, and yard. It does have a nice size clip on the side. It was extremely hard to clip onto clothes, soft leather. I had to stick some metal under the clip to loosen it up. The knife is made of aluminum. So it shouldn't rust. The description online and pictures are accurate. As you can see it is a well made, sharp looking cleaver knife.
