Cable stopped working and then started to smoke

I bought this cable around 2 months ago and it was working great loved that it came with a car charger but the cable stopped working while I was charging it, and I got the iPhone message that accessory is broken. I looked at the charger to find any damages and when I looked at the cable it was smoking a little Bit (at the lighting part) and it doesn't work at all

Melted itself in car

I bought this in 2016 to power my daughter's iPod touch in the back seat of my car. It generally appeared to work as expected, but I often noticed that the Lightning connector was hot to the touch even when no device was plugged in, suggesting it was drawing current well beyond what you'd expect from an open circuit (which is to say none). Well, a few days ago, it fried itself, as can be seen in the photo attached to this review. I knew something smelled horrible in the car, but I didn't make the connection to the cable until my daughter pointed it out. As I don't have the receipt anymore, I figured there was no point in going through trying to get a refund, and threw out the now-useless cable. I replaced the cable with a Belkin "DuraTek" cable, figuring I would at least salvage the 12V connector.
