StarTech.com USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet NIC Network Adapter, 10/100/1000 Mbps

The built-in Gigabit Ethernet interface on my motherboard failed and could not be repaired. I had to have Gigabit Ethernet to connect to the NAS I had just built; otherwise it was intolerably slow. I found the Startech USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet NIC Network Adapter at Walmart, ordered it, and it arrived in 3-4 days. Installation was a snap, except that I had to install the driver using Device Manager rather than follow the instructions that came with the adapter. I just found the only unrecognized device in Device Manager, right-clicked on it, selected install driver, and pointed it at the CD that came with the adapter. I also had to set the correct Ethernet parameters in Control Panel/ Network and Sharing Center, but that is expected and trivial. The automatic settings would have worked, except that I like a static IP address, rather than use DHCP. Windows 8 Automatic Updates just installed a new driver for the device, which seems to be working well. NAS transfers 30 to 300 Mbps over Ethernet for long periods, espeially during backups. Initially, I was concerned that USB could not handle all that traffic, since I already have a keyboard, mouse, scanner, two GPS devices, and two external hard disks attached via USB. But there has not been any problems with the USB or with any of the devices attached with it in about a week of use. Knock on wood.
