My new old-school washer does not have a fabric softener dispenser, so the manual recommended a downy ball. It seems to work just fine. I'm not inside the machine when it dispenses, but my clothes smell good and the dispenser is open and empty when I take it out. I was glad to find one online at Walmart because I didn't even know downy balls were still a thing.

I've been using these Downey balls since 2018, because my Whirlpool washer doesn't have a fabric dispenser. They work wonderfully. I did notice the other day they do get scummy in side so I have to take it apart to clean it twice a year depending on how many loads a person does.
