I would buy this again

This is used to provide protection for a pneumatically driven Gifford-McMahon refrigeration cycle cryocooler, a helium compressor, and the water-cooling unit for the compressor. All told a 2.6 kVA constant load, with a 5.3 kVA inductive load. This UPS allows us to conduct research at ~9 kelvin for extended periods without having to worry about a 5% change in voltage turning off the cooling mechanism.

Battery Replacement is a Nightmare

As part of a UPS battery replacement project that I am doing for my employer, I replaced the batteries in seven of these particular UPS units over the past few months. There were three consistent problems that I saw: 1. The screws that hold the front plate and the battery bracket in place are very soft and strip way too easily. Some of the screws on our units were so stripped that I had to drill them out with a drill bit in order to remove them. This is unacceptable, given the low cost of quality screws. 2. The bottom front edge of the case has a raised lip that is fairly sharp. It is very easy for cables to rub on this lip, especially during battery removal and insertion, potentially causing damage to the cables. I saw evidence of this kind of damage on at least one of our units. 3. Lastly, and most serious, on more than half of the devices that I serviced, the old batteries were so stuck inside the case that it required significant time and force to remove them. This is absolutely unacceptable, especially on units with purportedly hot-swappable batteries. The center battery pack comes with a very flimsy paper tab that is supposed to aid in removal, but this tab tore completely almost immediately on most of my units. After that tab is gone, how exactly are the old batteries supposed to be safely removed? As far as I could tell, the manual doesn't even cover this situation. Because of these issues, I cannot recommend this unit and will make sure that my company doesn't purchase any more for future needs.

reply from Supplier Response

We are sorry to hear of your difficulty with battery replacement on this platform. We cannot address how the screws in question were stripped, but by your description, they were stripped before you began your servicing of the unit. Certainly they would not leave the factory in that condition, and we have reviewed inventory to ensure that is the case. Beyond the screws, there are a number of factors that can add to the challenge of battery replacement. Age and elevated temperature, alone or in combination with each other, are primary drivers that can swell the physical cases of lead acid batteries. When batteries swell due to advanced age and/or elevated temperatures, they can defeat otherwise excellent designs. In this design, there is admittedly little room to accommodate such potential swelling, as the design prioritizes rack power density over easy access. We are working to improve the design and manufacturing of this platform to address points you mention in your review. The edge you mention, like any metal case bends, could be a problem if improperly machined. We have audited our inventory and do not find such defects from our metal fabrication. We are working to modify the opening of this enclosure as a running change to eliminate this potential issue, as well as to further ease travel of the battery assemblies. The battery pull tab, which is made of a specific 3M tape and complies with safety standards, is also under review with a goal to accommodate extreme force when needed, such as in this case where batteries were clearly swollen due to age or high temperature. A proactive battery maintenance schedule is recommended to avoid swollen batteries, as is environmental monitoring such as our Envirosense module for use with our WEBCARDLX network management card, which installs within the UPS. Thank you, Tripp Lite Support Team
