It works without rails too!

I made a big move from the southeastern end of the US to the northeastern end (technically mid northeast) of the US, and I had no space in my 2024 Hyundai Elantra. I bought it from walmart in Phoenix, and while it was a struggle to set up, I managed to have it tight on my car hood and make space! It really was a lifesaver and barely moved! Of course, I had to readjust it here and there at every stop, but it never came loose or broke apart. I definitely don't recommend long, long distance travel without a rack like I did, but if you're out going camping or doing a move across town or across several towns, I recommend it for that. Definitely a 5/5 star item.
