Burpee Eco-Friendly Natural & Organic 8qt Concentrated Seed Starting Coir Brick

Forget the days of hauling heavy bags of peat and topsoil from the home improvement stores to the garden. The Burpee Eco-Friendly Natural & Organic 8qt Concentrated Seed Starting Brick will expand to multiple times it's size when needed, and protect the back from heavy lifting. It mixes well with 4.5 qts of water and stores in a smaller space until needed. The quality of the product appears to be that of peat moss in both texture and appearance. I was able to fill thirteen half quart to 2/3rds quart containers and still have enough leftover for several more. My only suggestion is to have integrated some type of fertilizer within the substance, though the freedom to add one's own nutrients allows flexibility. But a professional needs to control the tender seed starting process in order not to burn the developing stalks with nutrients designed for mature plants. Nevertheless, I cannot justify deducting a star for that opinion, and I encourage those starting from seed to give the product a try--just utilize caution when adding nutrients.

This little brick makes a good amount of potting mix/seed starter. There are several reasons I wanted to try this product. One is my daughter wants to grow strawberries this summer and we needed to start the seedlings in the house. Two is I recently learned the difference between potting mix and potting soil, and now knowing the difference I think the delicate little seedlings will find their way out of this coconut potting mix much easier than heavy dirt, as this is much lighter. So I'm really understanding why seed starting mix is so important. The third thing I'd like to do is mix this with my heavy all dirt potting soil so that I can make a lighter more aerated mix that won't hamper the roots and allow for easier drainage. Something else I learned from this product is that it's eco-friendly! It's 100% coconut coir, which means it's 100% biodegradable which makes it a more sustainable resource as opposed to peat, which is what your typical potting mix is made with. Also, it's organic, which is always a plus! I would definitely recommend this product to anyone with indoor or outdoor potted plants!
