While the Bigfoot Cleyera is the largest Cleyera in the Southern Living Plant Collection, the Bronze Beauty is the most petite. Young foliage on the Bronze Beauty starts off as a light bronzy green and develops into a darker metallic-sheen emerald green. At the beginning of Fall, the Bronze Beauty transforms its formerly green leaves into a breathtaking scarlet-bronze that changes the landscape entirely. With its multi stemmed, shapely oval form its average texture blends into the landscape perfectly. The Bronze Beauty Cleyera, Cleyera japonica ‘Conthery’, is great for mid-sized evergreen hedges for full sun to partial sun locations. To do so plant 5 feet apart, center to center for the perfect spacing. Tiny fragrant white flowers are an added bonus in the Spring but are rather insignificant. The appeal of this evergreen is the wonderfully colored foliage. Moisture retaining acidic soil are major proponent in the health of your Cleyera and is extremely beneficial to the plant's overall health. These are not hard to care for plants, but they do require the correct care. Any heavy pruning or removal of large branches should be done in early Spring before first flush. Planting in mass are ground cover or as a privacy hedge are the most common uses of this Cleyera. In addition to its dense and upright evergreen growth the Bronze Beauty Cleyera are fairly fast growing shrubs. In ideal conditions it is not uncommon for these to add over 3 feet in a year. Because of this fast growth and size potential spacing is an important factor. For a seamless appearance you will want to place your Bronze Beauty 4 feet apart. If you are going for an approach that will cover more area you may plant them 7+ feet apart.
