Benfotiamine, a fat-soluble derivative of thiamine, is more bioavailable and physiologically active than regular thiamine such as thiamine mononitrate, which is a water-soluble nutrient also known as Vitamin B1. Clinical research has shown that benfotiamine's unique open-ringed structure, which makes it a fat-soluble nutrient, increases its bioavailability. Benfotiamine readily passes through intestinal mucosal cells, where it is converted into physiologically active thiamine. Even though Benfotiamine is lipid-soluble, research shows it metabolizes quickly, raising the blood level of thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), the biologically-active coenzyme of thiamine, which then continues to metabolize in the body as usual. Benfotiamine can help improve thiamine status in the body, but does not accumulate in the body.
