Rust can be dealt with
I have a 38 S&W model 15 that was damaged during a fire. Some of the water used to douse the fire splashed on to the sock with the gun in it. I didn't notice it. The water contained a fire retardant with caused the frame and trigger guard to rust . I used the gun oil along with a copper cleaning pad to scrub the rust from the frame. This approach worked well in removing the rust. I followed this up with a good maintenance cleaning of the entire firearm. The gun isn't perfect as there is some very minor pitting remaining that would have to be polished out, but it is a vastly better looking gun now.
