These trays are generous - they can accommodate a dinner with salad and beverage. They are strong and attractive, A standard placemat is just slightly larger than the bottom, or "well" of the tray. I may cut some shelf paper or such like to keep plates from sliding around - the melamine/plastic is glossy and slippery. My only suggestion would be to reduce the depth, or sides, of the tray. Unless you use it as a butler's tray you don't need the tall sides. They just take up more room when storing them. Delivery was very, very fast - I had time to order another set before the buffet I am hosting. What a great surprise.
