Hardy biennial or short-lived perennial usually flowering the second or third year. Usually dies after flowering.Considered one of the major medicinal plants by ancient scholars it is still well known and used in much of Europe, both for the medicinal uses and for its fragrance and flavor. The plant itself grows to about 3 feet, but the flower stalk can exceed 6 feet in height. Flowers are large, round globes of small, yellow to greenish flowers. While the majestic architectural flower heads are striking, the tiny flowers are not particularly showy, but that is not the point. Angelica is seen primarily as an aromatic, medicinal herb, especially in the cultures of northern Europe where it may have colonized centuries ago. The leaves and roots are used as a remedy for coughs, congestion, digestion, rheumatism, and urinary conditions. Regional claims of alternate applications abound. Also used as a flavoring agent, especially for gin, vermouth, and some liqueurs. Stems are also candied and for cake decoration.Grows best in rich soil, out of the hot sun. Likes moist soils and is often found wild near streambanks. The roots can be dug in late summer and if sealed will keep the wonderful fragrance for some time. Leaves are best harvested in June for best aroma and for medicinal preparations.
