I picked up the Athlon 3-9x40 with the BDC 500 IR reticle for a do-everything hunting rifle, and it has impressed me from the first range trip. The scope strikes a great balance of clarity, durability, and simplicity, all at a price that feels like a win.
Build and setup
Out of the box the Athlon feels solid and confidence inspiring. The tube and turrets have a clean, precise feel, and the included caps do a good job protecting settings once you are dialed in. Mounting was straightforward, eye relief is forgiving across the zoom range, and I had no trouble finding a natural cheek weld. The fixed focus keeps the design simple and rugged for general hunting distances.
Glass quality and brightness
For a 40 mm objective in this class, the glass is surprisingly crisp with true-to-life color and very respectable edge-to-edge sharpness. At 3x you get a wide view that makes target acquisition quick in timber and brush. At 9x the image remains clear enough to read small details, which helped on the range when checking groups and when picking a precise hold on smaller targets. Low light performance is stronger than I expected, with a noticeable boost from the illuminated reticle right at dawn and last light.
BDC 500 IR reticle
The BDC 500 IR is the standout feature. The subtensions are intuitive, the center is refined enough for precise shots, and the illumination has usable steps without blooming. With a standard 100-yard zero, the holdovers line up well for practical field distances, which makes this scope ideal for hunters who prefer to hold rather than dial. The reticle is bold enough to see against dark timber but still fine enough to avoid covering small targets.
Tracking and zero retention
Zeroing took just a handful of shots. The turrets track predictably and the clicks feel consistent. After several range sessions and a bumpy ride in the truck, zero has not moved. I also did a simple box test and return-to-zero check; everything came back exactly where it started. That kind of reliability breeds confidence when you are out in the field.
In the field
The 3-9x range is perfect for mixed terrain. At the low end it is fast for close encounters. At the high end it provides all the magnification most hunters need for careful shot placement out to reasonable distances. The fixed focus is set up for typical centerfire hunting ranges, which keeps operation simple. If you spend most of your time inside 25 yards, a side focus model might be better, but for general use the fixed focus works very well.
