Like other developing countries, people in Mauritius also have realized the importance of distance education. Learners have opted for distance education for professional development and upgrading their qualifications. Mauritius has recognized that in an era of rapid technological change and international economic integration, an educated and adaptable workforce can only lead the country towards prosperity. The Master Plan 1991 is one of the major steps in this direction which initiated distance education programmes in the four Government funded institutions viz University of Mauritius (UOM), Mauritius College of the Air (MCA), Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE), and Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI). The course material was either acquired from abroad or developed by any of these institutions and was made available to others. Training at all levels of operation is arranged through external agencies. The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) is responsible for such activities and is a nodal agency coordinating the activities of the tertiary institutions.
