Let's get one thing straight, George Romero is the greatest maker of Zombie films ever. Dawn Of The Dead (1978) is in my opinion the best zombie film ever made. It tells a personal story amidst a huge crisis. This film restarts the "dead" series. By the time of Day Of The Dead (1985) and Land Of The Dead (2005) zombies far outnumbered humans in the world. This film goes back to the beginning. Zombies are just showing up as the film begins.
Romero has always had a statement within his zombie films. He uses the zombies not only to drive the plot but he always involves social commentary within the zombie outbreak. While this might sound funny to a beginning horror fan, if you've seen his films you'd understand. While I enjoyed Land Of The Dead a few years ago, it's no Dawn Of The Dead (1978).
This film is about some film students who, while making a silly horror film, hear news of people coming back from the dead ("The people it kills, get up and KILL!!!"). They all decide to go to one of the girls houses and chill out, hoping things will blow over. However the whole film is filmed with a camera like on a news feed similar to Cloverfield and Blair Witch. It's about getting their video onto the net. They do this but how can they know what things they're seeing are real and what aren't? With this huge flow of information on the net, what is true and what is filled with spin?
The film has it's own meaning among this crisis and deals with it on a very personal level. While other modern horror films are filled only with blood and gore, and forget character development, this film is all about the small band of people. No one is a jerk for no reason, they're all different but you don't have someone trying to tear the group apart like in other films.
This film brings George Romero back to full form. He has created a horror film with real meaning and with a purpose among the mass of "horror" garbage filling shelves today. This is one of the greatest horror films I've seen in a while and other horror directors take note. The Horror King is back!
