Other presidential candidates, Stephen A. Douglas and John C. Breckinridge are walking tightropes to cross from the North to the South. Douglas is falling off a rope labeled "Non Intervention"; his uneven balance pole, labeled "Squatter Government" has thrown him off balance. Breckinridge is riding on the shoulders of Joseph Lane who is walking a rope labeled "Slavery Extension". Candidates John Bell and Edward Everett of the Constitutional Union Party are standing on a bridge labeled "Constitutio[n]al Bridge"; Everett states "Built by Washington, Jefferson and the Patriots of 76 this bridge is the only structure that connects these two shores in an indissoluble bond of union, and woe be to the man who attempts to undermine it."
