  • SELECT SITE:  Grows Outdoors All Year Only in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 9,10,11 otherwise Grow Indoors in All Other Zones
  • SUNLIGHT:  Loves sunlight yet thrives in a brightly lit warm spot away from direct sunlight, often being a western or southern-facing window. Site this plant in a place with highly filtered light and high humidity. The plant will grow taller with darker foliage and larger flowers in light shade, sun grown plants have a shorter stature and smaller, more plentiful blooms.
  • SPACING:  This upright shrub will grow to be 4 ft. tall & 3 wide; Space 3 ft. away from other plants or structures. Flowers can stand above the foliage, extending the height to 5 ft. tall when in bloom.
  • HUMIDITY & TEMPERATURE:  Place the plant in a humid spot of your home or mist it every day with water. It prefers a consistently warm room temperature between 65-80F. Mist the leaves often to increase the humidity. Aim for at least 50% humidity.
  • SOIL:  Grow in most well-draining potting soils. The plant blooms best in a pot where its roots are little restricted. The plant grows fairly well in most soil types yet thrives with rich loamy soil with a pH between 6.0-8.0. Mulch to a depth of 3-4 in. being sure to stay away from the plant’s trunk.
  • CHILDREN & PETS:  Bird of Paradise is not for human consumption, it is toxic to humans and pets. Keep the plant away from your children and pets.
  • WATER:  As a general rule, water when the top 1” of the soil becomes dry. It is important to keep the soil slightly damp but not soggy. Be careful to not overwater, because this could lead to root rot. Be careful not to water too little, because this could cause drought and the roots will dry & die. Water just a little less during winter.
  • FERTILIZER/FOOD:  Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer for blooming house plants every other week from March to September, cut back to once a month for the rest of the year. Follow package instructions.
  • PESTS/OTHER PROBLEMS:  Common plant suckers like aphids and spider mites can be eliminated by using a mild horticultural soap or neem oil spray.
  • PRUNING/TRIMMING:  Keep plant looking tidy and attractive by removing bloom spikes when flowers fade. Remove dead or unsightly foliage as it occurs.
