Historical designs explanation:
- The Gadsden Flag, featuring a coiled rattlesnake on a yellow background with the phrase "Don't Tread On Me," has its origins in the American Revolutionary War. It was designed by Christopher Gadsden in 1775 as a symbol of defiance against British rule. The rattlesnake had been a popular symbol of American independence since the early 1750s, with Benjamin Franklin notably using it in his "Join, or Die" cartoon. The Gadsden Flag was used by the Continental Marines as an early motto flag and has since become a symbol of American patriotism, as well as a symbol used by various political movements and organizations.
- The six-pointed star associated with General George Washington is sometimes referred to as the "Washington star." This star was used as a symbol of his leadership during the American Revolutionary War. Thirteen six-pointed stars (representing the thirteen original American colonies) were sewn on his headquarters flag, known as the Commander-in-Chief standard, that noted his presence on the battlefield. The star has since been adopted to represent Washington's legacy and contributions to American history.
