Back in Black
Key item features
Recorded in the wake of legendary lead singer Bon Scott's untimely death, this album became a tribute to the quintessential rock and roller, and incoming mic man, Brian Johnson did his predecessor proud. Now, newly digitally remastered, it has never sounded better.
Ominous gonging bells open the disc and lead into one of rock's great riffs, with that notorious, over-aged school boy Angus Young churning out the mighty "Hell's Bells." Johnson cuts through the lyrics with his buzz saw voice and the tough-as-nails "Acca Dacca" rhythm section roars along without apology. Track 2, "Shoot To Thrill" is an all-out, full-speed-ahead rocker with a chorus that, like the man says, pulls the trigger. Needless to say, it hits the target and has undoubtedly inspired more air-guitar playing than one can imagine.
Typical of AC/DC's often cheeky, proudly juvenile themes, "What Do You Do For Money Honey," continues the band's tradition of irreverent rock and roll -- which is to say, just as it should be. It also takes time out to pound on your skull with the group's signature guitar-driven onslaught. The boogie-fest, "Let Me Put My Love Into You," features one of Angus' gloriously manic guitar solos, while "Shake A Leg" rolls along on a huge riff that spirals like a Gibson SG hurled high into the air just the right way.
More monster tracks on this one. The title track is a grinding boogie with spit-in-the-face-of-the-adversity lyrics, "You Shook Me All Night Long," ranks as one of the band's best songs ever with their trademark crunching boogie-rock and an irresistible sing along chorus for the ages; and "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" stands as one of the most defiant rock anthems ever laid down.
Every track's a gem on this set and the production job of ace producer "Mutt" Lange brought out the very best in the raw AC/DC power chord sound. This is a disc that's been made to be played at full volume.
Back In Black, by the "Thunder from Down Under," marks the zenith of this great Aussie band. More to the point, it is one of the true all-time great rock albums.
TASTY TIDBIT: At one point there was a rumor making the rounds that, just prior to his death, Bon Scott sang on at least some of the cuts that appear on Back In Black but the tapes were locked away and never released. Hmm, will we ever know?
