Dark color blocks sun better than light colors. We first bought a white and beige umbrella that was very pretty but the sun shone brightly through it so it was not effective. This one does a better job. Also seems sturdy enough, especially for the price. It is just short of 9 feet across - maybe you can get to 9 feet exactly if you really crank on it. Happy with the purchase.
