Destined to Witness - Great Book!

Generally, I would not have picked up a book this thick. I teach, I take classes and I do not have the time. I love to read, but go for the quick reads. I am so glad that I did not by-pass this book. The writing was excellent with details so vivid that you clearly pictured the scenes. As he recounted the stories of his early life and his reactions, I was enthralled. It seemed he was also destined to prosper. I could only imagine the courage and character that he had to develop being so different at a turning point in Germany. There were points of great humor, suspense, warm heartiness and anger. The book gives an added dimension to the complexity of the German people during the war and to us, the human race. The book was much better than expected. It is a testimonial to the enduring traits of love, intelligence, self-discipline, and perseverance.

I was immediately attracted to the subject matter of this book - a black child growing up in National Socialist Germany! Come on, some things you just can't make up! The book was an interesting read, not as exciting as expected, but still worth a look by any WWII or history buffs. Not just for a new view from a first hand witness to Hitler's Germany but about the story of a truly accomplished and successful man.
