Sturdy, Functional wood. Instructions not clear so had to just use personal knowledge. Paint is matte like chalkboard paint, assumed it would have more of a sheen to it, but it still works so I overlook it. First week using it and so far it's been great. It definitely helps with having somewhere our pets can go that they can't get into things.
