Hammer Time!

I am an avid mountain biker and I was looking for a way to maintain and improve my fitness level in the off-season. I also want to be able to log more miles during the week as I am only typically able to get out for a ride on Saturdays. With advances in smart trainers and software training programs such as Zwift and Trainer Road it is truly amazing what the CycleOps Hammer can do when paired to them. I had no idea how awesome it would be to ride a trainer and I don't even like riding on the road (sorry roadie friends)! The dynamic resistance has been impressive to say the least and I'm now learning all about watts and FTP to improve my fitness level. It's awesome! I specifically purchased the CycleOps Hammer after researching several competitor products due to it's extremely versatile ability to connect to just about any bike you have. 1) Remember to remove the rubber band from the hub on the trainer if installing any non 11 speed cassette. It is holding a spacer in place and failing to remove it will result in harsh shifting. Remove the spacer if connecting an 11 speed cassette. 2) You can connect a SRAM 1x11 mountain bike if you use the SRAM PG-1130 cassette as it is compatible with an 11 speed Shimano hub - awesome! I can now use my modern mountain bike which is fantastic! 3) If you plan to connect the trainer to a PC you will have to buy an ant+ dongle which connects via USB. A lot of the software providers are making native apps on tablets and smart phones so these devices do not need ant+. 4) A fan is essential to help mitigate the sweat - just trust me on this one! I highly recommend the CycleOps Hammer smart trainer to anyone looking. It's priced well, you can connect the bike you ride regularly, and paired with software the indoor training experience is far better than I ever thought it could be.

Simply the Best

I've been using a CycleOps PowerBeam Pro trainer for the past 4 years, and have never had any issues whatsoever with it. The beauty of CycleOps is that their products are super solid, extremely easy to use, and the stuff just works. I've had the chance to try Computrainer, Wahoo, and a few other trainers, and the durability, consistency, performance, and easy of use of CycleOps is just better than everything else out there. I was curious to try the direct drive simply because I was curious and it's always fun to get a new toy. I've ridden on it several times now and its proving everything I hoped it would be. If I had to pick a downside, I'd have a hard time doing it. It's very heavy, but that also gives you a ton of stability and a great road feel, so I'm not sure that's something which could be considered bad. Great product!

Smooth, reliable, accurate.

The setup for this is only slightly more difficult than the wahoo kickr, but that is where my preference for the kickr ends. Side by side the noise difference between the kickr and hammer is nearly indistinguishable, but the interesting thing is that the hammer doesn't seem to vibrate the floor beneath it as much as the kickr. I could run this unit upstairs in the morning and (probably) not wake up anyone else in the house. The road feeling on the hammer is superior to the kickr as well. With the kickr if you stop pedaling during an interval it feels like you have to sprint in order to get the flywheel moving again. The hammer smoothly brings you back to the target wattage. And lastly (for this review) the hammer just feels more solid than the kickr. I'm not afraid to get out of the saddle and push some big watts while in the hammer. The kickr on the other hand feels a bit more flimsy. Really happy with this purchase.
