This patio umbrella exceeded my expectations by far. First of all, let's start with the base: it is quite heavy and substantial - something that you would expect to pay at least $60 or more for. It is not necessary to add water or sand to the base, as it is that heavy and durable by itself. It will withstand wind and rain. Next, the umbrella itself: it is made of a heavy duty cloth that has the solar lights under each metal spoke of the umbrella. These lights are the bomb - they emit just the right amount of soft light, even enough to read by. The best part is that you don't have to recharge them, since there is the solar panel on top of the umbrella. They easily turn on and off with the built-in switch. The lights add an ambience that makes almost any evening magical. The umbrella is easy to unfold or to fold back up and has an attached tie that makes it easy to secure when folded back up. The metal pole is substantial: it is easy to tilt the umbrella in which direction you want and the handcrank works well to unfold or fold the umbrella, not requiring a person to be a weight lifter in order to turn the crank, but still firm enough to keep the umbrella open or closed to the position you want. A nice perk, too, is that there is no shipping charge (as heavy as this umbrella and base are, it would be at least $40 to ship) and no sales tax (which would be around another $10), since it origniates from Ontario, Canada. Nevertheless, we received our order in 4 days and live in southeast Kansas, so there is not a long wait to receive this order. I am so happy and pleasantly surprised with the quality of this umbrella unit and recommend it highly, without reservations. Consider that the base alone would have cost around $80 with shipping and taxes added, plus the base can be used with any umbrella rod for years to come (as it will accommodate both a standard 1.5 inch or 1.9 inch rod), so it's like the umbrella is just almost a freebie.
