The story goes that an Irish sailor was captured and sold into slavery. He was then sold to a goldsmith who taught him how to craft metal. Once he was freed after many years, he returned to his sweetheart and gave her a ring he had crafted. That ring featured the Claddagh symbol. They were married and lived happily ever after.
