Poor design, maybe?

I don't if it's poor design or low battery power, but the display of the watch I got is very "dim" (for lack of a better word since it is LCD and not LED) in natural or ambient light even if it's bright. The display really pops when shining a flashlight or bright LED into it. However, the display is still legible in natural or ambient light. The watch just has to turned in such a way that would allow enough light to shine into the display. If it turns out to be low battery power, then I'll just wait until the battery dies and then replace the battery. By then, the warranty would have lapsed. If, however, after replacing the battery, I get the same result, then it's actually just poor design which will explain the $21 price tag. I' ll just have to live with it for as long as the watch will last. Which, if I go by the last Digital Timex I had, it's going to be a loooong time. The last Timex I had lasted me 32 years. Not the battery, of course, nor the band or the pins for that matter. Those were replaced several times. I mean the watch itself lasted me 32 years.

We are sorry you are not loving the negative display. We do have watch styles in our Ironman collection that have the standard display; feel free to check them out at: https://timex.com/collections/ironman-watches.
