I have been using these for years. I have them in everyroom. And they do turn on automatically when the power goes out. I cant remember what a dark house looks like cause these as nightlights are fantastic. The reason i first bought these was because when during a storm and power went out I couldnt catch my 2 dogs 2 cats and parrot in the dark. Had no idea where the cats hid. First bought other emergency lights and found these the best so got all of these. Just make sure you set it right when first plugging in. make sure its for automatic instead of flashlight. Worth every penny.
