Several years ago my riding lawnmower was stolen out of my shed. A few months later I replaced it; then the new one was stolen. Since then I've mowed with a self propelled. Out of concern that something else might be stolen, I decided to paint my address on my stuff. One thing I painted is my wheelbarrow. I used a white latex paint and painted my address large and sloppy. It's an eye sore.
When it comes to removing paint you really need to research the solvents available because it matters if the paint is fresh or old, single or layered, latex or oil and if the surface is wood, metal or plastic. Furthermore, unless you live in California the solvent is probably going to have some cancer-causing agents... and never mind the smell. (However, for a small job, I think I'll be fine.)
The solvent I've chosen, Klean Strip Kwik-Strip, removes 5 layers of old latex paint in 15 minutes. (It also removes 5 layers of oil in 45 minutes.) It's recommended for wood, metal and masonry. My wheelbarrow is metal. The challenge I have is removing a single layer of latex with hopes the manufacturer's paint will remain unaffected. With this in mind, I'm going to initially leave the Klean Strip in place a fraction of the recommended time.
You won't believe this! I sprayed a sponge with my Klean Strip so I could directly apply it to the numbers and it wiped the paint off instantly leaving the manufacturer's paint intact! My photo shows how it looks with one swipe. Next I wiped it clean with a soapy cloth. This stuff exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend it.
