I bought the king sized protector to protect a new latex mattress from my toddler. When I got it, out didn't smell all but I washed out anyway before putting it on our bed. The first night, my daughter spilled milk in the bed and the mattress stayed dry.

Stupid expensive but really good quality

This is the third one I've purchased (one for my husband and me, one for my older kid and now one for my little guy). They work. They're waterproof, they don't have any nasty off-gassing smell. I have tried budget versions of this product that don't last a year. Our oldest Naturepedic mattress cover is 6 years old and still in great condition.

Perfect for kids bed

Love this, I've ordered 2 (one to have as a backup) for my 4 year old. It is definitely waterproof and also throw up proof. It's thin and light, not crinkly. Just be mindful when you wash it as the water obviously doesn't pass through the sheet, my washer has a hard time when it does the spin cycle.
