I have a cat that ALWAYS “plays” in the water bowl. (She has a hard time seeing the water level) She splashes out half the bowl every time she goes to drink, and I have tried everything I can think of. This bowl is quite expensive, but for me it was worth it. The bowl no longer gets tipped over and when she “plays”, which is rare now, it's at the back of the bowl and the splashes mostly stay in the bowl. I no longer have water all around their food area. The only downfall is the water gets stagnant quickly so it needs replaced quite often.

Purchased for thirsty critters strolling through the yard on hot Texas days. Previously used a bucket but the deer kept knocking it over. Purchased this because it is lower to the ground, has four stable legs, and will not tip over easily, also accessible for the smaller critters to drink without climbing the sides (squirrels, feral kittens, etc.) It's also a pretty color, looks like an oasis in the desert :-)
