John Frederick Kensett (22 March, 1816 - 14 December, 1872) was an American artist. He studied engraving with his father until 1840, when he traveled to Europe to study painting. Over time his style evolved from traditional Dutch landscape style to a more Luminist style. He was acclaimed and successful in his lifetime, and in turn was an avid supporter of the arts and artists, and among other things a founder and trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
