In the four years since the release of Alicia Keys' last studio album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, the R&B songstress has raked in numerous Grammys, made a serious foray into film acting, and popped up as the new muse of none other than Bob Dylan. This last is certainly the most interesting -- is it a marker of Keys' genre-busting artistic appeal or Dylan's late-career kookiness? Both, probably, but let's have someone else look into the latter. The real point with Dylan's ref is Keys' intoxicating presence. He didn't have to be a weirdo to write that song. Keys' smoky voice, her way of making R&B that's somehow in league with hip-hop and measurable as pop, lends a deep intrigue to her person. She's the definition of a "chanteuse."

Her secret seems to be the delirious mashing of the classic and contemporary. In jazz-tinged, soul-cured slow jams, Keys invokes much of old Motown and no shortage of yesteryear's Blue Note. But unlike, say, Amy Winehouse, she's not engaged in any "retro" activities. Never do we confuse Keys' sound with something pre-hip-hop. Even in a track like stunning new belt-it-out ballad "Wreckless Love," in which Keys lets husky arias rip over burnished horns and strings, she feels current. There's always some snippet of Lauryn Hill sass, some beat chopped modern-wise, keeping our calendar updated.

On "No One," As I Am's lead single, the modernity is easier to trace but the vintage elements are even more powerful. A deep, snaky beat -- primed for the club but calm enough for solo listening -- drives a straightforward anthem built on basic piano and heartfelt vocals. Keys and her co-producers have wisely realized that a steady rhythm is all her voice requires. Her scuffed, searching pipes turn the simple pairing into an anthem.

This blend -- a steady beat; organic instrumentals; and a voice that's never glossed up, that feel's like it's really lived a little -- is the theme throughout As I Am. It's a lovingly under-produced record (only "Like You'll Never See Me Again" feels slightly synthetic, its drum machine beat too cold for Keys' warmth). Even on "Lesson Learned," where John Mayer drops in for a cameo, the record avoids showing off. We hear sweet backup crooning and cool guitar, but might never notice the star power if we weren't clued in. The open hearted, open-book album is en vogue these days, but As I Am really means it.
