Students amazed

We are currently using these seeds in an artificial selection lab experience. The seeds sprouted quickly and the traits of the F2 generation a clearly seen.

Always perform well

I have been using WFP plants for lab experiments in my high school classroom for many years and they always perform well. I use this particular set of seeds for an artificial selection lab, and at the same time that they are growing I use the students' plants in a Mendelian Genetics Chi-square lesson, and plant anatomy. Very versatile for teaching. I will note that you need to pay attention to the specific growing recommendations.

Never fully grown

We had a lot of trouble growing the plants. They only got to about 2.5 inches tall. We did use a different potting system from (small terra cotta) than what was recommended in my daughter's documentation. I'm not thinking this would result in such undergrowth, but rather the opposite, as the pot was more than 1.5 the diameter of what was recommended (half-cut plastic bottles. Suggestions?

Thank you for reaching out. The most common cause of poor growth in WFP is lack of light or incorrect soil. Plants should have high intensity lights kept very close to the tops of the young seedlings (3-10 cm). Wisconsin Fast Plants do not grow well in potting soil. A light vermiculite soil is needed. Carolina sells a soil blend specifically for WFP (https://www.carolina.com/wisconsin-fast-plants-supplies/wisconsin-fast-plants-potting-soil/FAM_158965.pr) but a mixture of peat and vermiculate will work. Please see our care guide (https://www.carolina.com/teacher-resources/Interactive/living-organism-care-guide-wisconsin-fast-plants/tr48604.tr) or contact customer service and ask for Living Technical Support.
