In today's game, the 3-point shot has never been more valued in offenses around the world. Coach Dan Monson has embraced this new offensive philosophy with an up-tempo offensive system.
In this video, Coach Monson shows you how to get more 3-point shots within your offense. See the philosophy behind having a 3-point shooting team and the drill "Seaming the ball" to get your players shot-prepared. Learn how to create a secondary break or "flow game" into 3-point attempts, and how set plays can become transition plays into a fast break 3-point opportunity.
3-Point Philosophy and Fundamentals
You'll see how to get your team to commit to being a 3-point team. Monson discusses his approach to shooting technique, including the footwork of setting up the shot and "seaming" the ball to have better control. The importance of footwork and "swishing the pass" to get a good 3-point shot are also covered. You'll learn a simple drill you can use at the start of practices to build the foundation for great shot preparation.
If you're going to increase the influence of outside shooting in your game plan, you'll also need to emphasize it more in practice. Monson explains how he plans his practices to incorporate more shooting that will translate to game shots. You'll also learn other details such as shooting goals that Long Beach State uses in games and the importance of building a multi-dimensional offense.
The Flow Game
Watch the Flow Game (or the Secondary break) in action as Monson breaks down eight options that can be run in transition. You'll learn the terminology and roles responsible for each position in this early ball screen offense. Each option gives you the ability to set pick & rolls from different locations with different angles and other added wrinkles. Monson demonstrates how post players read one another to space off the actions of the screener. These pick & roll actions will allow your team to take advantage of the defense before they get organized.
Fly Sets and Transition to Fly
Monson presents five quick hitters in his "Fly" series that can be used as a half court set or run into from a fast break.
- Iowa - Find an open shooter in the corner with the popular "Hammer" action.
- Pop - Confuse defenses with an unusual alignment and flurry of movement to create shot opportunities off multiple screens.
- Wide & Flat - Open up the court for your point guard to attack with two plays that synchronize screens for your shooters.
- Spartan - Follow up your double drag pick & roll with additional screens to create an open shot.
Along with all of the quick hitters in the fly series, Monson adds his favorite zone play. "Slash" utilizes quick ball movement and dribble penetration to occupy defenders and leave a shooter wide open.
