The movement to preserve America's most remarkable wild spaces and to establish an endowment for future generations began in the 1860s. Visionaries recognized that these lands and historic places should be protected and cherished for "we the people" to experience. Our connection to these public spaces is especially significant as the modern world creeps ever closer to eclipsing our natural treasures.
