Have you ever baked a cake in a basket oven? Marjorie DeAngelis learned to do that and so much more during the fifteen years she spent in Kenya from 1974-1990. Cameos of Kenya is a collection of poetry, prose, letters, recipes, illustrations and photographs about her experiences there (and yes, how to bake a cake in a basket oven!) Born in New Brighton, PA, she graduated from Beaver Falls High School, and joined a missionary congregation of Catholic sisters in upstate New York. On completion of training, she was first posted to England and then to further studies in Rome. She served briefly in Connecticut and in 1974 she requested and was sent to Kenya, where she taught and did pastoral work at a teachers' college and three secondary (high) schools and a nurses training school in Western Kenya. In 1980, she left the congregation but remained in Kenya, teaching at various high schools, and did clerical and pastoral work throughout the diocese where she worked. On her return to the U.S.A. in 1990, she began to write poems and stories about her experiences and the people she came to know and love in Kenya. Some of these pieces were written soon after her return; others were written very recently of memories still dear to her.
