Oil pump failure

after installing a new front engine cover and this new Melling pump upon cranking the engine to prime the pump wouldn't prime never got oil to come up and to the oil filter housing pulled it all back apart found the inner gear had broken in half. it took out the brand new $500 cover and obviously the oil pump needs to be replaced. the end of crank was also scored up where the inner gear rides hopefully it is not damaged beyond repair
