Managing Chaos: Improving Medical Incident Management By Instituting A Standardized Nation-Wide Patient Tracking System, critically examines the need to improve patient tracking in disaster situations. To establish context, the author drew upon personal experience as a medical planner for the 2005 Presidential Inauguratron and queried numerous publications that discussed the impact and aftermath of the September 11 tragedy and Hurricane Katrina. These events reinforce the importance of disaster preparedness and competent incident management planning and further establishes the need for a standardized patient tracking system. The research provides an overview of the current and emerging patient tracking systems that are available. The research examines the implications for incident management by analyzing the tracking systems and discussing the need for standardization and integration into the current emergency response system. Finally, a recommendation is made that integrates the research findings. The recommendation reinforces the need for a standardized nation-wide patient tracking system.
