Excerpt from Laying Down and Taking Off

Laying Down and Taking Of work is done on the floor of a well-lighted room called a mould loft. This floor is usually sufficiently wide and long to lay down the largest sized vessel that will be built in yard. Nearly every shipyard has its mould loft, the majority being constructed in such a manner that the entire floor is free from posts and obstructions, light being admitted on all sides and from overhead.

As I desire to make my explanation perfectly clear to men not familiar with work done in a mould loft, I will first describe and illustrate the work of laying down a small commercial vessel to be constructed of wood and afterwards explain the work of laying down a vessel to be built of steel.
