The blocks are decent size, and easy to hold and use for a beginner. I'm an adult, but my hands are a bit slender, and I find the blocks comfortable to work with. I didn't see any knots, and the wood is very forgiving of a beginner's wood cutting attempts. There weren't any instructions included of course, the package just contains the blocks, but a few good online videos is all it takes to get started.
